about

“2am Emergency at the Pokemon Center” - During the curation process for this album, producer Elizabeth Zharoff asked the musicians involved to cover some tracks from a list of notable games that had yet to be claimed. The music from Pokemon stuck out to me since many of the tunes are simple enough to be molded and shaped to my liking. After a failed attempt at setting the eerie theme from Lavender Town, I settled on the rather banal tune from the Pokemon Center, one which is likely familiar to anyone who has played any of the flagship Pokemon games. But over the course of composing the work, a darker narrative began to emerge, once I began creating the text. The scene is narrated from the perspective of the attending nurse behind the front counter trying desperately to communicate with the protagonist of Twitch Plays Pokemon as he runs sporadically around the lobby. In an historically revisionist retelling of the Gospel of Helix, Red, lacking Pokemon Insurance, threatens to sacrifice his newly acquired AA-j and the rest of his team to the bowels of the PC unless the center agrees to heal the injured Zapdos for free.

lyrics

Scalpel...
Making first incision.
Excising malignant tumor.
Closing up incision.
Careful...

Here's your damned Rattata!

Please wait one moment...
Welcome to our Pokémon center.
*yawn*

Please let me have your name, your age, your date of birth.
What is your trainer number?
Registration?
How many Pokémon are you admitting tonight?
I need you to calm down!

We need your information.
We cannot proceed until we have you in our system.
Now, I need your insurance.
Oh...you don't have Pokémon insurance?

Well...then...how serious is it?
What?? It's wings are broken?
Please turn around sir!
Do you want this Pokémon admitted here tonight?
What is this Pokémon anyway?
Zapdos?
I'm sorry...AA-j?
What kind of stupid name is that?
Sir, sir, SIR, SIR!
Please listen to me when I'm talking.
Stop running 'round the foyer.
I don't want your stupid fossils.
Don't touch that PC!!

Hey now, can't we all be friends?
Please don't throw AA-j away.
No one has to die today.
We'll overlook your insurance needs.
Chancey, prep the OR.

Scalpel...
Making first incision.
Vitals are dropping quickly.
Don't you die on me!

Here's your Pokémon!
